Freetown, Wednesday, 24 March 2026 The Rt. Hon. Speaker Segepoh Solomon Thomas has reminded Members of Parliament of their primary obligation to the people they represent, citing Section 97, Paragraph (B) of Sierra Leone’s 1991 Constitution.
In today’s sitting, Speaker Thomas urged lawmakers to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the constitutional directive that MPs should regard themselves as representatives of the people of Sierra Leone, and desist from actions aimed at improperly enriching themselves or distancing themselves from the public.
Addressing the House, the Speaker welcomed Members returning to sittings after a long recess and reiterated that Parliament exists for the service of the Republic. He explained that the adjournment and scheduling of sittings were intended to allow the All People’s Congress (APC) to complete its lower-level elections and to take account of the Eid holiday.
Speaker Thomas said additional time was granted in good faith, to ensure no Member would be placed at a disadvantage by attending parliamentary business while election activities were ongoing. He added that work for the people has resumed, and MPs should be prepared for Parliament to hold sittings more frequently.
“You have been elected by your people. You come to this House of Parliament to serve the Republic of Sierra Leone. All other considerations are secondary,” Speaker Thomas stated. He noted that although MPs belong to political parties, their election ultimately means they must serve Sierra Leoneans first.
The Speaker further called on Members to engage constructively in the House, noting that there are “more than one hundred and ten ways” to urge government to address public concerns, and urged that parliamentary attendance should not be used as a tool to pressure the executive.
He concluded by inviting APC leadership in Parliament to a special meeting at his chambers on Thursday at 1:00 p.m. prompt.
