FREETOWN — The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, Conrad Sackey, has disowned a viral social media report claiming he explained the delay in the release of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) results and that government saved US$1.37 million.
In a strong rebuttal, Minister Sackey said he never issued any such statement, describing the publication being attributed to him as false, fabricated and misleading.
According to the Minister, the circulating report which quoted figures, explanations and even claimed he spoke on Saturday, 24th October — did not emanate from him, his office, or the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE).
He pointed out that the report even cited a date that had not yet occurred, exposing the falsehood behind the claim.
“The words, figures and explanations attributed to me are fabricated,” Sackey said, distancing himself and the Ministry from the viral statement.
The Minister acknowledged the anxiety and concern among pupils, parents and teachers awaiting the 2026 WASSCE results, but warned that spreading misinformation on such a sensitive national issue should not be encouraged.
He stressed that all official updates regarding the 2026 WASSCE results will be communicated only through the Ministry and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) via their verified and official channels.
Minister Sackey therefore urged members of the public to disregard any statement that does not appear on his official pages or on the Ministry’s verified platforms, and to always verify information before sharing.
He also called on media houses and bloggers to cross-check facts with the Ministry before publication and to immediately retract and correct the false story in circulation.
The Minister reaffirmed the Ministry’s commitment to providing accurate and timely information to the public, describing responsible journalism as a vital partner in the development of education in Sierra Leone.
