The National Disaster Management Agency and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have come to the aid of 150 households devastated by the August floods, distributing emergency supplies to about 670 people across Freetown on Tuesday, September 9, 2026.
The joint intervention targeted some of the worst-affected communities, including Portor Community in Juba Hills, Metchem and 44 Femi Turner Drive in Goderich.
Relief items distributed included bags of rice, cooking oil, mattresses, zinc roofing sheets and other essential household commodities. The distribution was coordinated and facilitated by NDMA.
The August 3 and 4 floods swept through several communities in the capital, destroyed homes and claimed four lives, leaving many families displaced and without basic necessities.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony, NDMA Deputy Director General Sulaiman Bockarie Sowa praised the Church for its swift response to the Agency’s appeal. He said strong partnerships are vital to ensuring vulnerable communities receive timely support after disasters.
NDMA Director General John Vandy Rogers also thanked the Church for its continued humanitarian work in Sierra Leone.
“This is not the first time the Church has come to the aid of affected victims. We appreciate the Church’s partnership and timely response to almost all our requests,” Rogers said.
Representing the LDS Church, Elder Lon Larsen, Welfare, Self-Reliance and Humanitarian Missionary, reaffirmed the Church’s commitment to standing with families in crisis.
“We remain committed to supporting vulnerable families in times of need,” he said.
Community leaders welcomed the gesture. Alhaji Barrie, Community Chief of Portor, and Mohamed Turay, former Headman of Metchem, said the relief would go a long way in helping families recover from the disaster.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude, saying the support came at a critical time as they struggle to rebuild their lives after losing property and livelihoods to the floods.
