Freetown, Tuesday September 9, 2026, The Ministry of Health has launched a national toll-free mental health support line to help Sierra Leoneans struggling with emotional distress and at risk of suicide.
The Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health announced that members of the public can now call 5116 free of charge to access immediate support and counseling.
Health officials said the helpline is part of a broader awareness campaign aimed at encouraging people to seek help early rather than face mental health challenges alone. The campaign carries the message “Salone Big Pass Wi All,” a call for community support and care for anyone experiencing emotional or psychological distress.
According to government health policy documents, the Directorate of Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health is responsible for mental health services within the Ministry of Health.
Officials emphasized that calling 5116 connects callers to trained support personnel who can provide guidance, referrals, and a safe space to talk.
The Ministry is urging families, schools, workplaces and community leaders to spread awareness of the line and to check in on relatives, friends and colleagues who may be struggling.
Mental health advocates welcomed the move, saying access to a free, confidential helpline is a critical step toward reducing stigma and preventing suicide in Sierra Leone.
